  2. STUDIO CIVIC FRICHE

It is hard to believe that our two months in pursuit of civic friche have finally drawn to a close; if anything, the project feels like a beginning.

We had set out to unravel an emergent urban typology, a paradoxical coupling of terms – the institutional with the abandoned – and to gain an understanding of how France’s marginal sites are tactically reappropriated for public function. What we discovered were a series of landscapes, buildings and thinkers that define public space in inspiring new ways.

The architects, landscape architects, scenographers, urban installation artists, administrators, academics, researchers, developers, photographers, squatters and impulsive frichers whom we met on the way made access to the sites possible, and we cannot thank them enough for their enthusiasm, intelligence and graciousness.

We would also like to thank the team of students from the University of Michigan who elected to take part in this exploration. Their energy, curiosity and sincerity were contagious. And we are eager to see if and how the civic friche research manifests itself in their future thinking, representations and design strategies.

The civic friche team continues to finalize the semester’s research as it is truly a work in progress.  We invite you to follow a more in depth analysis on www.civicfriche.com
